Along with the re-election of our President, Coloradans legalized marijuana. What does that mean? It is now legal to grow six plants in homes across the state. Adults over the age of 21 will be able to purchase an ounce from regulated retail stores, but publicly rolling a joint won’t be tolerated inside or outside.
I am sure that early revelers will be out and about smoking a bowl in celebration, but the amendment won’t be certified for up to two months according to the Boulder Daily Camera.
Personally, my lungs can’t handle cigarette smoke and I detest the stinky smell of weed, so I won’t be partying down.
Remember the characters Cheech and Chong? They were popular when I was in college. I can just imagine a conversation between the two of them.
Cheech: Dude! Did you read the paper today?
Chong: Papers? Dude, they’re right in front of you.
Cheech: No, the newspaper. It says that people can smoke weed in Colorado.
Chong: I thought we smoked weed the last time we were in Colorado.
Cheech: It’s legal now.
Chong: You mean we won’t get thrown in jail?
Cheech: Well, the DEA could still bust your ass.
Chong: So it’s illegal?
Cheech: No, it’s legal, I just told you.
Chong: Dude. Pass the bong. You’re giving me a headache.
~~~
After all the speculation and arguments on both sides, we’ll see what happens with tax revenues, dealers, and early drug use.
I wonder if John Denver is smiling down from heaven.
The top photo is a winter wheat crop. No marijuana fields yet.
Loved the conversation between Cheech & Chong. You could be a writer for a comedy show on them! Funny post, Susie.
Paul
Haha… very funny!
I tried to keep the politics out of it and what better way than to use Cheech and Chong!
Thanks!
HA! This was a pretty funny post. I saw this proposition in the news and had no idea you guys were voting on this measure.. Cheech and Chong crack me up. I’m sure they’d be traveling to your state soon, but California is also a good state for them too. You know, with them having glaucoma and everything.
I am sure they will come on out along with many others. Hahaha!
Loved Cheech and Chong. They always have epitomized the life of true stoners for me!
Thanks Guat!
Love Cheech and Chong…especially Dave, but not so sure about legalizing pot. I am totally against distracted driving/driving under the influence of anything. This is just one more way to make our roads unsafe.
It is a tough one and I am surprised it passed. On the news just now, one of the biggest supporters looked completely shocked. He didn’t even know what will happen since it is still illegal federally!
I am just the reporter on this one!
Thanks for weighing in Kristy!
Ghad, how did I miss this? LOL! John Denver smiling from heaven yes, one of my favorite dudes! Loved him. Okay, well, I’m not a pot smoker but I know people that do love it. I actually had elevated eye pressures/glaucoma, so I qualified to smoke it cause it lowers eye pressures, had surgery instead. I know its one of the best anti-emetics around for chemotherapy patients and let me tell you there’s a lot of chemo given out, so maybe they will smoke it in clinics. What a concept. I don’t really think it’s as bad as alcohol…this is my nurse and adult observation. I can’t believe I missed this. I guess the election, my recent job, book and life has me held a bit. I never skip your posts cuz I love em.
!
Awww! Thanks Lilie!
I posted around 10 yesterday, because I wrote it after seeing the results. Much later than my normal 7 in the morning post!
We already have medical marijuana dispensaries so we’ll see how this next step goes. Maybe “up in smoke!” Hahaha!
I thought of Cheech and Chong when I heard of the legalization of weed in Colorado.
Great minds think alike! Hahaha! Thanks for reading!
My hubby and I used to laugh so hard that we would cry at Cheech and Chong movies….between their antics and outrageous humor…do you remember the one where Stacy Keech slowly turned into a lizard? We loved them….right Dude:) I joined your artistic and fun blog:)
Hey thanks so much! I haven’t heard that one about Stacy, but will look it up! Loved those guys and Chong played the same character for years on That 70′s Show.
Whenever we needed a night of hysterical laughing we either went to see them at the movies or we rented the movie…you will like the one with Stacy as it is so out of character for him and he plays it just right:)
Sounds like there’s peace in more ways than one over there! I’m impressed… (love your dope dialogue)
Thanks! Cheech and Chong were my favorite comedians back in the day!
I am glad that they made it illegal to smoke it in public. Stoners can smoke at home. Then they’ll be too sleepy to go out and drive anywhere! The Pizza delivery service is going to go waaaaaaay up in this state! Hahaha!
i know how fast you can move on these things Susie, so get thinking about some T-Shirt designs and a Bronco’s shaped Bong. Call it a Brongo! you’ll make a million!
You could put your “ginger” touch on them! What a concept Jim! Hahaha!
It’ll work!
A colleague today suggested we should move to Colorado (or Washington state) and open up a little “Mom and Pot” store to sell weed and munchies
We have tons of dispensaries, but I think it will be a different license. In this economy, I think there will be a lot of interest in new business…
Love the name Mom and Pot! Hilarious!
Legalization of herb is far overdue all across the land. Yet we can buy alcohol which is more dangerous? Hmmmm.
We are the guinea pig state. In another two years it will either be viewed as a great idea and other states will follow with similar legislation or a really bad one. Time will tell!
Thanks for weighing in John!
I’m with you, no thank you. I do believe it should be legal. I’d not be smoking it up, I’ve seen too many in places they can’t leave because of doings involving this stuff. Until the federal government signs on, take great care.
I won’t be smoking any! I’m just the roving reporter…
Now CO will be even more popular (good news – bad news).
We’ll see how it goes. With all the construction and change in demographics, there’s a concern about drug turf wars – the MX cartels probably aren’t happy.
But Cheech and Chong – thanks for the giggles!
It is so hard to predict the ultimate outcome of this and much has been speculated, so I guess we will soon find out!
Love Cheech and Chong! Thanks for coming by!
This is something that is long overdue, and with time, more states will go this way. Trillions of dollars have been wasted on anti-drug campaigns that could well have been better spent on health care and other issues.
Colorado was always my favorite state, now more so!
It will be something to see what happens here. All eyes will be on our state. I bet we at least see a bump in tourism!
Who said anything about smoking? How a stab at Alice B Toklas’ recipe for brownies?
I just looked her up. Interesting gal! “Love her most favorite recipe, “Haschich Fudge,” a mixture of fruit, nuts, spices, and “canibus sativa.” From Wikipedia!
Thanks Tom!
Beautiful pic, Susie! Cheech and Chong? Boy, that takes me back…
Thanks Hook! I took that photo yesterday. Cheech and Chong came to mind this morning after I found out that the amendment had passed! They were so funny!
Oregon’s Pot bill went down! Still have medical marijuana. It’s getting to be like the last days of prohibition around here. Your state might be getting a few visitors. Denver could be the New Amsterdam! What will the jails in CO and WA do with all those empty beds? Maybe let the stoned sleep it off?
Hahaha! So true! I thought of Amsterdam and newspaper article said that we would be left of them! Can you imagine??? Well we have always been a travel industry state! Hahaha!
So you’re allowed to buy it but not smoke it, that’s weird. You rocked that characterisation!
A person can smoke it in their own home,. but not in public places.
I wasn’t sure if I should blog about this since a stay far away from politics, but after I thought up that Cheech and Chong skit, I had to hit publish. I loved those guys!
Thanks so much Catherine!
Here in FL it’s not legal and when my Dad had cancer I often wondered if it might have helped him if he’d been able to use it.
It is supposed to ease the pain and help with digestion. We have medical dispensaries already, but anyone can get a prescription is the opinion of most people. This will really be something to watch.
I am curious about something. I remember hearing that the federal government (i.e., the DEA) can still bust people for smoking the ganja even though it is legal within some states. How does this work?
And, as another commenter said, cook it if you don’t want to smoke it. There’s a secret to cooking it, but it’s easy to research.
I strongly suspect that we’ll see the legalization of marijuana in my lifetime. Will I be Cheech and Chong-ing it? Doubtful. But I don’t think it should be illegal.
The DEA can swoop in at anytime although the feeling is they focus on big time dealers and not individual users. 60 Minutes just did a great story on all of this. They also stopped by one of Boulder’s medical marijuana dispensaries and taped the process of making pot brownies. Although I didn’t see the interviewer eat any, I am sure he was offered a bite!
Thanks so much Catie for stopping by! It will be very interesting around here!
Nice up in smoke skit Susie. I think it should be legal nationally and heavily taxed. The states can certainly use the extra income.
Everyone will be watching to see what happens here and in Washington.
I had that album in college!
Wow, you were quite a fan!
I hate cigarretes too, but heck if someone wants to get stoned around me, I wouldn’t mind, as long as they keep to themselves.
It will be interesting that is for sure. The law only will protect those that smoke in their own homes, but I bet there will be some part:)
Thanks M!
Wow, that’s really surprising, Susie!? (Hilarious skit too, though) I know those who are in pain will appreciate this, though. Perhaps I should blog a special brownie recipe for those who don’t like to smoke;D
We already have medical marijuana dispensaries here, but you can send them your recipe!
Hahaha! My son’s comment was that it would be safer for those who smoke it, if they grow their own, they know what’s in it.. And the drug trade would go down.. in smoke, lol!
Good one! Hahaha! They would get high at home and not go out driving…
That conversation is pretty spot on… We can have a Rainier Mountain High now too.
Thanks Ted!
I heard about Washington. Which state are you moving to?
I might stay in Hawaii…
Hey! Say hi to Doug for me!
Don’t worry!
Great Post – ha! Maybe more than a few people will be a little bit happier now! Have a Great One:)
I am sure that the news put a smile on a few faces this morning!
Thanks Renee and have a great day too!
Harold and Kumar go to Colarado will be the sequel!
Hahahaa! You are too laugh out loud funny!
Too some this will be a godsend….. and then there will be others that will be abusing the system. You cannot seem to win.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
Seriously. We have had medical marijuana here for a while and that has made it practically legal since it seems like anyone can get a prescription. It will be interesting to see where we are 2 years from now.
In addition to Colorado, Washington State legalized weed as well. I had a brief mental image of my dad, sittin’ on his deck watching the sunrise saying: “Yeah, but have you ever watched Star Trek when you were high?” It’s for the Glaucoma, right Dad?
Love it! We tease my mom about it too since she has glaucoma, but she has never tried it.
Thanks SF!
Look for more convenience stores opening soon.
Hahaha! And drive through windows…
Hmmm…. new and very lucrative tax revenue source!
We’ll see how it goes…
Thanks for stopping by!
I am guessing you will have lots of visitors!
I bet you’re right. I wonder if Cheech and Chong will pay us a visit….
