How To Go Viral On Reddit or The Ironic Complaint

The last day of 2014 was WILD. I blogged a post complaining about my year-end stats. They were identical to 2013’s. By 8:00 AM, I had 200 views. I thought the title, “I Predict More Stories About Boobs in 2015,” reeled them in. Nope. Someone shared an old post on Reddit and it went viral!

Singing Happy Birthday Could Be Risky Business – $10,000 Worth, blew up. Why? That post is two years old.

I scrolled down to referrers and Reddit was at the top of the list. Reddit? I’ve never gotten a view from Reddit. When I refreshed my blog, I had over 1000 views! I freaked out and updated the post inviting new readers to my “Home” page.

From there it went to 5000 views an hour for about seven hours and then it tapered off.

You probably can’t see the computer screen with all your eye rolling. “Good for you Susie. Who freakin’ cares.”

Before you click away, read on… You want to go viral, right?

What goes up must come down. I knew the views wouldn’t last.

There are up and down arrow buttons next to the Reddit post. It becomes popular when readers click the “up” button. After the post makes it to the “Front” page, readers who already “read it” hit the “down” button. This makes room for new content. Pretty clever, right?

Do you see how Tsukamori rewrote the title to get people interested?

By midnight, I had almost doubled my entire year’s views. At 11:59 they were 47,232 for one day! Instead of the 49,000 I had complained about, my year totaled 96,504. Ironic or what? There were another 4,800 on January 1st.

The party is over and I’m back to my average views per hour.

You know, I’m all about over-sharing. This is how to go viral in 2015!

1. Create a Reddit account.

2. Add a Reddit share button alongside Facebook and Twitter.

3. Once in a while, write a post that is controversial and informative or funny. While researching the history of birthdays, I found the info about Time-Warner owning the rights to the song.

4. Someone surfing the web may find your post interesting enough to throw into the Reddit vortex, or better yet, a blogging friend could share it. Your title and first 55 words are critical to search engines.

5. I believe in Karma. The more you share, the more likely others will share your posts. The next time you learn something or crack up laughing at a funny blog post, share it on Reddit. There are many categories to choose from.

Note: In the Today I Learned category, the post has to be at least two months old.

Bloggers are blocked for spamming their own posts on that site. I know since I’ve attempted to spam my blog in every Reddit category!

You may be thinking, “I shouldn’t care about stats.” I posted my year in review on Facebook and Gabby Abby said:

I care about numbers. If I didn’t, I’d write in a private journal. Even though most of the views yesterday were hits, readers were introduced to my name and my blog. All exposure is good in the world of publishing.

Tsukamori shared my post on Reddit and on his blog, Awesome Facts. We can take a lesson from him. Why stop at Twitter and Facebook?

Life is so ironic. I’m done complaining. You never know what’s in your future. Maybe this will be your year to go viral!

Happy New Year, Wild Riders!

  1. Congrats Susie that’s brilliant! Redditors scare me… I haven’t had a massive amount of Reddit experience but the nastiest comments I’ve ever received have come from there… So glad yours was much more positive – and it deserves to be – your posts are amazing!

    1. Thanks Susie! With all those views, I didn’t get one comment on the actual blog post, but there were hundreds on Reddit. I only looked at the top comments early on. There were some derogatory remarks about Wendy Williams.
What did you post over there?

      1. I didn’t know anything about Reddit, didn’t read the terms and posted a few things included something about things we’re entitled to. I was compared to Hitler haha! It’s a ruthless place if you’re naive and assume everywhere is nice like WordPress… My own fault…

  2. Congrats on this Susie, both for the views and for being brave enough to go on Reddit.

I had a look at it once, it scared me (because nastiness and complicatedness) and I ran away!

    Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks so much PN!
It wasn’t a choice. 🙂 Someone shared my post over there. It’s a feeding frenzy of commenters and most hide behind fake names. Chuck Wendig has participated in AMA Ask Me Anything a few times. Talk about brave!!!!!

    1. After buzzing around the site a few times, I found a few of my posts had been shared, but they had very few up arrows and didn’t go anywhere.
You should check that place out. It’s like a super rowdy party with guests who have very little filters.

  3. Kinda fun huh?!? I had an old blog of celebrity gossip type stuff. I once had a picture go viral on google. Was getting 70,000 hits a day on average for about 5 months. With that eventually brought lawyers saying I did not own rights to the photo i swiped off another gossip site. I enjoyed the ride but did not need the hassle.

    1. It was crazy. I just put up that traffic counter on the side of my blog and 9 people would be there within a three seconds of each other.
That is insane! I hope you didn’t have to pay a fine. Back in the day everyone Googled images and used them. I took most of them down for fear of being sued.
70,000 hits a day is a ton! I’m still getting a few and hope it lasts a while.

      1. No I did not get sued but was threatened. Funny, how can a guy like me draw the attention of the publicity firm of the actual person in the photograph? Be the number one searched site on google searches!! haha. Oh well, I learned me lesson and try and not to do that anymore.

  4. I didn’t even know about Reddit until recently. I think I have all the share buttons available on my posts. I’ll look for it on other bloggers’ posts now too. Thanks for the info!

  5. Wowza! Isn’t that odd that you were just talking about how you didn’t crack 50,000 last year?? Amazing timing! Congrats! I really never knew what Reddit was until now. (I’m just starting to figure out twitter for god’s sake…)

    1. I know! And we had just talked about sharing posts on Twitter. All of it was IRONIC!!! Kinda freaks me out. I didn’t write this in the article, but it’s been on my goal list for a while. Going viral is up there with getting published and becoming a recommended blogger like you!

    1. And likewise! I am still learning. I saw a lot of posts today that were spammy, so who knows? Maybe we can post our own stuff. There are rules for every category.
Thanks so much! Happy New Year!

  6. Wow. What a site. After reading a bunch of the comments here, I’m not quite sure I’m ready for Reddit. But it’s great to know that if you want to become known, that’s a place to use. Congrats on your big numbers. I’ll check it out nevertheless.

    1. Thank you!
The controversial stuff can really blow up and celebrities seem to be fair game. I know they don’t allow personal attacks. It is fascinating as a very unreliable news source. 🙂 It can get the brain stimulated and a good search going. I saw something about new research that finds it’s mostly just bad luck for the patient. Nothing in their lifestyle caused it. I went back to read the article and it’s already gone from the front page! I want to Google it this afternoon…

  7. Big congrats Susie! I hope that plugged into a little ad revenue for you! It could mean another weekend skiing! And I can’t imagine those views were not about your boob posts. Heck I was just writing a good boob post up just to draw a little attention to my tine corner spot on the Internet… 🙂 or reblogging YOUR story… Happy New Year Susie!

    1. Ha! Boobs have nothing on Reddit, unless a Boob story blew up on Reddit!
I don’t get any revenue from Adworks, but if this becomes a “thing,” I may look into it. I might make a few dollars! Few being the key word!
You are welcome to press that “Reblog” button anytime!
Thanks and Happy New Year to you!

  8. Good for you Susie! You deserve an “S” on your chest or new boobs, or something. Oh wait, you’ve already got that. lol. Well, you are certainly the canary with this one. I don’t know anything about Reddit. So I appreciate your candid experience. I’ll have to look into it. Thank you my friend and have a great New Year! ((Hugs)) 🙂

    1. Thanks Karen! Happy New Year to you! ((hugs))
I almost took it off my share buttons and glad I kept it! There must be millions of readers over there if that many actually clicked on the link to find out more. It was insane!

  9. I’ve never even considered Reddit. I thought people simply posted you there. I didn’t know you could have an account. Your numbers are amazing. Of course, stats person or not, it must be thrilling. My stats were down down, so I was sad, and then I thought, but I love my community at my blog, so I quit complaining. Still, stats seem to account for success. Thanks for the info. I will look into this! Happy New Year, Susie!

    1. Thanks Amy! Happy New Year to you!
It came out of left field. What was truly amazing is I never complain on this blog. The one day I whine, the universe says, “Shut up already!”
I am still learning about Reddit. I think you may be able to share your own stuff, but I’m not sure.
There are millions of bloggers now compared to a year or two ago. There’s a lot of competition out there! I’m with you and will continue to build my community. 🙂

  10. That’s certainly coincidental timing, Susie. It seems that almost every Lame Adventure I have written someone has hit that Reddit share button on my site. I’ve just checked and I’ve had 1,014 Reddit shares thus far. That said, I’ve only had 136 referrals from the site and they were all for a post I wrote several years ago about a nickel. It wasn’t controversial at all, but it appealed to their coin collectors, eight nerds all named Horace. The comments, all seven of them, were pretty tame. I think I even got a follower or two from it. Woo hoo.

    1. It’s probably a couple of readers who share consistently. I have 5 other posts which were shared, but none of them took off like this one.
There are a ton of categories over there. I’m sure there’s a category called, “A nickel’s worth of Horace,” just for you! I only looked at a couple of comments. There were 5 or 6 hundred. I got turned off when someone laid into Wendy Williams. That’s Reddit for you.

  11. Researching the history of birthdays? Hee! What did you find? Or should I check your archives? I got sucked into a conversation between various people on Reddit during the last hurricane on the east coast. It was hilarious. Did I sign up? No. Will now though. Thanks for the nudge. Not holding my breath about going viral. There is a certain TV series where Virals are creepy aliens. Also, even though getting lots of hits has almost rehabilitated the word, viral still sounds like sick. I think you, as the word queen, should rename going viral as going Wild. Cheryl Strayed won’t mind.

    1. I LOVE it! I went WILD is right! Ha!
Singing Happy Birthday is copyright protected. That’s why you never hear it sung at restaurants by the staff or in movies. No lie! I think Reddit is a powerful source of untapped readers. I’m not sure many of then are into blogging, but 50,000 of them stopped by for more information. Wild Really WILD!

  12. Well, that’s a great start to the year! I suppose I care about stats, but not enough to really work at it… but I know who to go to now for answers when I do 🙂 Happy New Year, Susie!

    1. I am such an expert. Pshh! I’m still learning about these sites. Reddit is a moving target. I don’t know if I’ll ever fully understand it. I think it’s a place people go for information, for laughs, to kill time or to rant. You can find everything there and probably a little more information than you bargained for.
Thanks Alarna! Happy New Year to you!
