When Life Imitates Art

The Addams Family 1

Danny and I embrace our weirdness and dress up as Morticia and Gomez Addams every Halloween. I find it transformational when donning a wig, applying dark makeup and slipping into Morticia’s character for the night.

I remember the original drawings of The Addams Family created by Charles Samuel Addams. He had an interesting fascination of the macabre and drew over 1300 cartoons in his lifetime. He inspired and consulted for The Addams Family TV show, one of my favorites while growing up.

“Just the kind of day that makes you feel good to be alive.”

Perhaps that caption inspired Andy Grammer’s hit, “Hallelujah.”

We discovered the Boulder Dinner Theater would perform The Addams Family musical and had to go. It exceeded our expectations.

When Wednesday Addams falls in love, she trades her dark, sadistic personality and garb for sunshiny, daffodil yellow and shocks her family. Her brother, Pugsley laments the loss of her torture. She confides in her dad, Gomez, she is engaged, but makes him swear not to tell her mother, Morticia. The musical becomes a wild romp when the uptight future in-laws arrive for dinner.

It made me think about how much truth there is in judgement and secrets. I could care less about being judged. It’s no secret how different I am from everyone else. You gotta love the skin you’re in.

Have you watched The Addams Family? Do you like dressing up in costume? Do you think you’re pretty average or ‘out there’ like me?

  1. I love to embrace my “weird” too, and just recently dyed my hair blue. . . and not one person who knows me was surprised, because it’s so true to my nature. Love the costumes, and now I want to see the musical, as it sounds fabulous!

  2. “Adams Family” was one of my favourites. I always thought it would be cool to be like them but never would have thought to actually do it. Even for Halloween. It’s wonderful you and your husband can do this together.
I hadn’t even heard of the musical but now I want to see it.

    1. We have so much fun every Halloween. It is our tradition!
Since you loved them growing up, you would love the musical. Every character including Lurch, Grandmama, Cousin It and Thing, made an appearance. Hilarious!

  3. I loved Aadams’ artwork – also very funny.
Realistically “average”/”normal” may be less common than people think – as society loosens rules, it all becomes more apparent.
Question: do you tiny step across the floor like Morticia did in the series?…watch those steps! Must have tango, too!

    1. It was very well-written and captured the essence of the original The Addams Family. I couldn’t believe the level of the performance. We plan to go to more of them! Watch for it in your area.
      Thanks, Carrie!

    1. I am lucky that Danny gets into to it too!
I’ve seen all of the episodes and movies several times. And the theme song is the BEST! Da, da, da DA! *snap, snap*
Funny thing. Danny wanted to dress in character for the musical, but he was sick and I didn’t want to fight with my wig while eating. I have to keep my chin lifted to keep hair from flying in my mouth.
I had a eureka moment while watching Morticia during the performance. She wore bobby pins! 🙂 Next time!

    1. Ha! That is so great that you sport her stripe, proudly! She was a tough gal, that Lily…:)
Morticia cracked me up with her gardening and snipping the heads off roses. Both were excellent family shows. Nothing compares!

  4. Haha! I love costumes! Tha Addams Family was one of my favorite shows while growing up, too. Yep, I sure do love to wear costumes. I’m weird through and through. Oh well, what’s a weirdo to do? 🙂

  5. Fun Post. I have to say I stopped getting in costume after I stopped appearing in community theater in Connecticut. It was so much fun and I enjoyed it. The best part I had was Humphry Bogart in “Play it Again Sam.” So many flirtations.

  6. Other than being incredibly handsome and awesome I’d say I’m just average. 😀 But I LOVE dressing up for Halloween. Funny costumes, ghoulish costumes, whatever. Kim and I usually try to do something together. Best holiday!!

  7. OMG Susie. You guys look awesome!!!! Mathair had me watching both the TV show and the movies. I used to tell her that I wanted the same kind of relationship that Gomez and Morticia have. In fact, I’ll be thirty in June and I still refuse to get married until I can find my “Gomez”. Hahaha So I would have to say that we’re pretty out there like you, Susie, and very far from normal. 😉 Great post.

    1. Thanks so much, Inion! It’s fun to dress up especially when I have a partner in costume. 🙂 I’m glad you are waiting. Your Gomez is waiting for you too!
      I’m glad we can relate.
Thanks for the Facebook share too!

  8. I loved that TV show when I was a kid, Susie. I thought the theme song was a lot of fun and it gave me the incentive to learn how to snap my fingers. I am much more of an under the radar personality who prefers to stand on the sidelines than in the spotlight. Are you aware that Roz Chast, the New Yorker cartoonist, is a huge Charles Addams fan?

    1. I remember the finger snap being a thing too. My dad introduced me to Addams. He was an inspiration to many illustrators, like me. But how cool to illustrate for the New Yorker. I just chase my own tail or is it tale…either way, I’m still waiting for the day when I get paid for something.

  9. I’ve never seen one of those original drawings, I love that! I’m not particularly a dressing up person (notwithstanding my fabulous queen costume yesterday 🙂 ), but I love seeing others dressed up, and you too look wonderful! I think I’m deceptively “out there” – because I’m pretty quiet and introverted and compliant (what an awful word, but I can’t think of a better one right now!) most of the time, people assume certain things about me that aren’t necessarily true…(she says mysteriously).

    1. Thanks, Vanessa!
      Out there is good!
I think dressing up is so much fun especially since most the time I sit and type all day in work out clothes.
You may want to google more of Addams’ cartoons. They are super amazing. The Addams Family, as weird as they come, was welcomed into households all over the world. It sure opened the door for people like me. 🙂

  10. I loved watching the Addams Family as a kid while growing up in Australia. While I loved the storyline, the way the characters looked creeped me out a bit 😀 You two make a very convincing Morticia-Gomez pair. Very well done and classy 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, Mabel! That is so cool that you watched them too. There was just enough humor in the show to keep it from getting too uncomfortable. I remember Wednesday’s persistence in harming Pugsley did set me on edge. It was back in the day when I thought main character’s could die. Ha!
      Thanks for stopping by!
