Three months ago, I made a doctor’s appointment. Later, I decided to fill my day with them. Why not blow one day instead of three? I scheduled another at 10:30 and my last at 4:45.
I arrived at the doctor’s office on time. This was the first appointment of the day, so I thought I’d get in and out quickly. I’d have plenty of time to run errands before my next.
The minutes clicked away as patients seeing other doctors came and went. Maybe I didn’t allow enough time for my next appointment. My palms began to sweat while I caught up with blog comments on my phone. I waited and waited and waited as my gut tightened.
Thirty minutes later, I considered downloading a book to read. The nurse called my name.
After hustling into the examination room, I stripped naked and donned one of those lovely tie-in-the-back gowns. Then I sat up on the table and waited and waited and waited again. I stared at my purse and longed for a book to read.
Another THIRTY MINUTES passed.
Finally, my OB-Gyn arrived. Whew! He had checked out my old fibroids with walkers and seeing eye dogs the last time we met and also performed an endometrial biopsy. The first time it had been so painful, I almost bolted from the room. I had been nervous about this appointment and didn’t want any more problems. After a thorough examination, he told me that my uterus had shrunk. The seeing-eye dogs have left the building. YAY!
It’s all good now. Only routine exams from now on.
While I raced to my next appointment, I had an AHA moment.
THE MOON. Of course! It was a full moon the night before. My doctor probably delivered babies all night. I would think that many doctors’ offices are filled after that particular phase.
I made it to my second appointment since they were running late too. No surprise there. At 4:45, I prepared for a long wait at the hair salon and it didn’t disappoint. No matter. I wrote a new chapter for my book.
Early the next morning, I had an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon with a follow up about my knee and broken wrist in January. The moon continued its crazy spell on people and the x-ray order was screwed up. I should have brought War and Peace.
From now on, when I book ANY kind of appointment, I’m going to make sure the moon is in its fingernail stage.
What do you think? Have you noticed a correlation? I bet you will now!

I used to have to wait a while, but now the wait has been cut down quite a bit. (Maybe because everyone has finished their lunch breaks and scrambled back to work by my two-something appointment?) I almost always bring my tablet to my appointments–eye, doctor, teeth. The only ones I never need to wait much for are chiropractor and hair!
But when I want to write, I turn to my phone. I can’t see very many lines at once, but typing in the horizontal position is okay for a short time. (I’m kind of sad I couldn’t get my bluetooth keyboard to jive with my tablet–using that is fast and easy!)

Sounds like you come to appointments prepared! Good for you, Daya. My last Dr. appointment fell on a new moon. I was in and out so fast, I didn’t know what happened. Ha!

Don’t. Even. Go. Here. I’ve waited up to 2 hours to see a doctor for a routine medical examination. I needed a physical in order to get my prescription refilled for my thyroid medication. The pharmacy would not give me a refill and the only way to get it refilled was to have the medical exam. I wasted an entire day trying to refill my thyroid medication. It’s a joke. Since I’ve been in Mississippi I haven’t gotten in to see any medical professional in less than an hour. It’s sickening.
I’ve learned to make my appointments as late in the day as possible – just before closing. Nobody wants to stay late so usually I’m in an out in about 60 minutes. Which is still excessive, but better than 2+ hours.

2+ hours is insane! I would check the moon phases next time too. My last appointment was during a new moon and I didn’t wait at all! Glad you cut down your wait by going late. Hey. That rhymes!

I have to drive 184 miles to see a pulmonologist. I usually double up other appointments while I’m “in town.” One time I left the examination room and informed the doctor that I was leaving (which I did) I’ve never had a wait since.

Excellent! Way to stand up to all that dinking around. At least he/she wasn’t delivering babies or patching up bodies all night as an excuse. 🙂 It’s still a pretty crazy couple of days each month. I always forget unless I look up!

I do seven specialists. Lucky for me it is every 6 months except for one. The one is every six weeks. Oh I forgot my PCP. Once a year.

If the appointment is in town, I always call 1/2 hour before to see if they’re on time. Some offices seem happy to give an updated time, while others seem indignant that I would consider MY time as valuable as theirs. 🙂

Ha! That’s a great idea. This was the earliest appointment. I finally asked if he was in. He was, but I think he may have been with an overnight patient or someone who had a problem. It took over an hour! Looking back, I’ve been that patient who needed extra care, so I guess it’s how it goes. 🙂

The moon has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with doctors’ complete and utter disrespect for their patients’ time. I worked for years and if I had a meeting that was running late, I would call the next appointment to warn them I was running behind. Doctors seem to think they are exempt from such courtesy. Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox and my apologies for the rant.

Your probably right in some cases. I think mine were swamped with overnight patients. The moon played it’s part, for sure! I think the appointments made later in the day get backed up for obvious reasons, but I will definitely look at the moon phase before scheduling OB or orthopedic appointments next time! 🙂

I admire your tenacity, Susie! It is really kind of clever to ruin one day instead of many. LOL! I’ve never thought of doing that, but since I always have a book with me, maybe I’ll consider a new tactic! I have multiple appointments waiting to be scheduled because I am absolutely expert at procrastinating.

Thanks, Debra! I would definitely take the moon phase into consideration if you’re booking your OB or orthopod. They are the ones more affected than anyone. Enjoy your book!

It’s amazing how often appointments run late, even the first ones in the day (I’ve tried scheduling them for 9.00 am and had to wait – it’s definitely a bit looney when that happens…).

It is looney! I remember waiting for a dentist to arrive one morning. I felt like, “Really?” I didn’t notice the moon that day. Ha!

As someone who works in a doctor’s office I can attest to your conclusion. Moons new and full are noted on the calendar in order to prepare. Lateness is nothing compared to the pure craziness. Never underestimate the power of a moon!

I’m so glad you agree! I was in a tired funk over the weekend and my daughter said she was wiped out too. “I bet it’s a new moon,” she said and she was right! Ha!
I had no idea that’s why they are included on the calendar. Many must pay attention. I will next time!

It must be the mountains, Susie. When I go into the city (Chicago) for my transplant checkups they usually see me within 20 minutes of my appointment…, unless the doctor has called in sick and they forgot to notify patients !!! That’s happened a time or two. War and Peace sounds like a good option though ! 🙂

Transplant??? That sounds intense. I’m assuming heart. Then you should bring a book to chill and give it a little rest. What a bummer if they forget to call! It takes so much time out of the day.

That’s an interesting way to view a doctor running behind schedule, Susie. I had a doctor’s appointment after work last Tuesday with someone who’s usually prompt, but she was running way behind schedule. Verizon was there; the tech was sitting in a chair next to me snoring because the airhead receptionist didn’t notify my doctor that he had arrived. I attributed the problem to my doctor’s phone and internet being down, but maybe if there was a full moon that day, that was also a factor in that outage? This give me food for thought. I should use the moon as the reason why I’m late for The Grind, but I suspect that idea will fall flat with The Boss.

Definitely check it out. New moons can wreak all kinds of havoc too with spaciness, being tired and mistakes. I don’t know as much about them as full moons. Hey, when you can blame the moon, it’s a good thing! Let me know if you notice any shenanigans during the next full moon. 🙂
