It’s Not too Late for a Weekend Getaway Like This One!

It's not too late for an end of summer getawayThink summer is slipping away? It is. Mental lists of activities planned for the summer will fade as days shorten and cooler air rolls in. It can be stressful to think about fall if you haven’t enjoyed your summer. You might think it’s too late for a weekend getaway.

I stressed out about two weeks ago. I had made a list of everything I wanted to do this summer and then conquered less than half of it. The list was written on a note. It must have gotten tossed out with the morning paper. Been there?

One activity stuck in my mind. I wondered if it could recapture summer. There was only one way to find out.

My son, Kelly, moved to Burbank, California and has been attending Icon Music Production School since July. He’s heading home between quarters, but I thought a beach trip might be just what I need to get my end of summer fix.

With less than two weeks before leaving, I wondered if the flights would be astronomical. I booked roundtrip flights to LAX for $140 through Southwest. Whoa! My daughter, Courtney, joined me.

I used VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) and booked a place in Venice Beach. I’ve rented many through the years, but poor location, lack of air-conditioning, hard beds and pillows can add up to a not-so-great experience. I’m usually pretty lucky.

This one was the bomb. Super modern and a few blocks from Abbot Kinney, I wanted to move in permanently. We were more than pleased.

We spent a lot of time on the beach. Being landlocked, I appreciate the rhythmic thrum of the waves breaking on shore, the sandy beaches and am always awed by the ocean.

I had seen The Easy Lay on The List and bought one on the beach two days later!

Plan a Weekend Getaway

It’s as comfortable as it looks.

We ate like Kings and Queens at Killer ShrimpWater Grill and brunch at The Tasting Kitchen. It was hard not to overeat.

Killer Shrimp

It’s a good thing we visited. I walked into Kelly’s apartment and it looked the same as when I left. He and his roommates hadn’t bought any furniture for the living room or kitchen. There was no place to eat or sit down.

A trip to IKEA was in order. For just under $500, we bought a sleeper couch, table and four chairs, a side chair and a coffee table. Thank you IKEA!

I hope everything is out of boxes and put together by the time I need another summer fix around November. UPDATE: Three more chairs to go. Yes!

The best part of my end of summer getaway? Hanging out with my kids!

Yes, I recaptured summer and just in time. It’s not too late for you. Check something off your list.

What’s on your end of summer list? Where would you go to getaway? Have you used VRBO or AirBnB?

  1. It seems you & I are on the same page, hanging out with our kids…the best! We have used both VRBO & Airbnb on a number of occasions & have been very pleased with the accommodations. My advice is always to read the reviews! Looks like a fabulous little runaway Susie!

    1. Hey Lynn! I was just thinking about you. I’ll stop by to catch up with your adventures.
I love hanging out with my family!
We lucked out with the rental. It didn’t have any reviews on VRBO, since they use another site primarily – Feature Homes, so I took a chance. You might want to check out that site if you’re ever in the area. It really was a great last minute mini-vacation. We packed four days with all kinds of fun and flew back to Colorado at 8:00 PM!

  2. We own a house in Boise and have it rented out to vacation renters on a site called Vacasa. It works much like VRBO and AirBNB. The shared economy thing is awesome! On my end-of-the-summer bucket list is to stop fall from coming! I love summer. But, when fall does come, I’m usually ready for sweaters and comfort food.

    1. I will check out that site! Thanks for the tip.
It’s gloomy and cool here in Boulder today and forecasters predicted snow in high elevations. What???? I might need a sweater. 90’s by the end of the week. That’s Colorado for you!

  3. I got a vicarious thrill out of your beach fix–heavenly! Where I am high right now in the high mountains of Colorado, it’s been stormy and feels like fall comes sooner here. So thanks for the blast of warmth!

  4. Great post! Glad Smash is getting his groove on (so to speak, or should I have said ‘grooves’), what lies ahead will be super I’m sure.

I am shocked, Susie, that you didn’t insist on staying and putting all the Ikea together for him.

    1. Thanks, Ted. So great to see you!
He has two roommates or I would have insisted. They’re almost done!
He’s doing really well in school and loves it. Music is his thing and has been since he was a toddler.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I was thinking of running away to a lovely hot, sweaty city. This beach life can get to one. I’m off to Detroit in two weeks. (I know, I know I could have selected better, but it’s my boyhood home) Excellent post, Susie.

It’s cool here in Boulder today. Hopefully, you’ll hit the weather right. Visiting family? I need to get back to Wisconsin too, but avoided the hot humid summer this year. *spoiled*
Maybe you can road trip “up north” for a day!

I would love to see a boat race. What kind of boat? I’m home now, but plan to come out a few times this year!
You and your kids would love The Easy Lay. There is room for all of you.

I’ll keep a lookout for you next time, I’m a total loser. Sorry 🙂 … We have our annual cardboard boat race …. We built Optimist Prime last year … Cardboard and A LOT of Duct Tape. Stay tuned for the post on Monday. Maybe I’ll run into your son when I’m Burbank and be like … Are the Wild Rider’s son?! 🙂

        1. Ha! He would love it! He’s playing at the Avalon as Chuck Shadow on September 2nd if you’re into DJ’d shows. I won’t be there this time, but hope to hit one by the end of the year.

So sorry to miss you. I only tried to track you down through the blog and didn’t want to be too aggressive. Ha!

  7. Funny, since I we live at the beach, my idea of a getaway is the mountains. Our daughter and granddaughters live in Charlottesville, Virginia not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Needless to say, for more than one reason, I make a trip up there as often as possible. I’m originally from the Adirondack mountain region so it’s like coming home. That’s also why I love visiting our friends in Denver.

Sounds like it was mom to the rescue for your son and the guys. They will really appreciate that furniture during the school year!

    1. The mountains and the beach. What more could we want, Al? That’s great that you’re able to visit her and get your mountain fix. Denver is cool too!

I think the boys were having a stare down, but none of them would pop for the furniture. I had no idea it would be so cheap or we would have bought it when we moved him! Courtney was on it and surfed their site while on our way. She had everything keyed in so all they had to do was decide on color. I wish we had one in the state when the kids went to college! That would have saved so much time and money, even though I went to used furniture stores.

  9. Well, the only thing I checked off my list was upgrading the HVAC in the house. No, that wasn’t very exciting, but necessary. At least now it’s done and one more thing I can cross of my “to do” or “house needs” list.

Not to worry, I have a cruise scheduled in late November so I’m looking forward to that.

Enjoy the last of your summer.

  10. A trip to California has been on my mind. How did you know? *grin*
And Ikea totally rocks. I moved from the east coast to the west with only what I could pack in my car and almost totally furnished my new place using Ikea. And I’ve discovered seven thrift stores in the area. Gotta love that!
Keep on adventuring and maybe one day we’ll be in the same place, at the same time. I’d call that pretty freaking awesome. 🙂

  12. Sleeper couch? How does that work out? Is that like the fold up job that I had in high school in my bedroom, where you wiggle your nose and snap your finders and your bed makes its self? I lost a girlfriend in one of those once’ the front door opened as my parents returned home a few days early’ the poor dear was thin’ so it worked out’. Wow! Who’s the Surf board Model?

‘And oh Lord that is not the beak of a rare and endangered 32 toothed Peach faced humpback flamingo bird in your Muscle soup there is it?

‘Nice Key board and music setup there.

‘As for our summer plans we are having a lot of fun with our little boy Ryker’ he just turned 3’ a few days ago. But with him starting the first Pre-School in three or four weeks’ (He is set up for two summers of Pre’ so our summer travels are closer to home’ with day trips to the Oregon Coast where he loves to play and build sand castles and get chased by low water rolling into shore. I tell yah Susie this boy is burning more of my calories than I can consume’ oh wait he loves Hot Fudge Banana Ice Cream Sundays and single scoop chocolate on the cone. I’ll have to the math on that’ and get back with you.

‘He got to pet a Fire Dog the other day’ he was in seventh Heaven over that one, it was a cool and dear Dalmatian pup. But we cannot own Dogs of Cats at the senior’ home’ or kids for that matter’ so we just keep sneaking him in the Golf Bag. Kidding…

‘It’s more of a Anne of Green Gables here’ with me and my dear wife over half a century and our little boy of 3 years old. If it wasn’t for our fostering him and adoption’ I would have seized up and found a Checker Board social down at the corner store… Hell I am flying those tiny balsa wood hand gliders with him’ and even got my Butt stuck in a tube slide at the park the other day’ with ten or more angry kids kicking the hell out of me to ‘Help me Pass through’. God Bless those little Ankle biters. 🙂

I’m so happy for Kelly! There is nothing better than doing what you love. As for a group of music lovers not caring about furniture…that is point on. Everything after their passion is secondary … lol!

    1. I know! I love the beach too especially when living landlocked most of the time. Kelly will be visiting twice before Christmas, so I don’t know if we’ll get out again this fall. We’ll see!
