What Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher taught me last Friday

Last Friday, I shared the same small coffee shop with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis,  and had a mind blown moment. Not because they’re celebrities. I’ve seen a ton of them over the years. And I don’t count those I pay to see. I do count the night at Mr. Chow when Sir Elton John held court at a table filled with beautiful men. The same night, Billy Bush stopped at our table to talk to my daughter and her friend. They had run into him on the way to the ladies’ room. Benicio Del Toro, Cybill Shepherd, Emily Blunt, Billy Idol… Trust me. It’s a long list.

I believe in The Secret. For those of you who aren’t aware, it’s a bestselling book about the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction. I’ve always felt like I’m that person. Lucky. The fact that my husband, Danny, and I got together is pure luck times ten. When I read The Secret several years ago, I tried it out. It asked the reader to imagine something cool happening and live like it already happened. I finished the book on our way to a resort in Costa Rica. I imagined running into a celebrity. Once we arrived, I realized how stupid that was. It was filled with families and everyone spoke Spanish. If there were celebrities at the resort, they would be lost on me. I don’t watch Telemundo.

After a long day of traveling, my husband and kids checked out the ocean. I sank into a recliner near the pool. A young man and woman walked past. He noticed my mesh bag. “Are you reading The Secret?”

“I just finished it.”

“Here.” He took out his ear buds and handed me his iPod. “I’m listening to it right now. We’re going to get something to eat. I’ll stop back in a little while.”

I listened to his iPod until he came back. He and his girlfriend sat down and we became acquainted with the whole, “Where are you from? What do you do?” kind of questions. Wait for it….

He was a freakin’ actor from Vancouver. NO LIE! He had just finished a series for the History Channel.

Flash forward over the next few years. I won EVERYTHING including a heli-ski trip in Canada and every raffle I entered. One time I bought an extra ticket for a friend and said, “Don’t worry. You’ll win.” We both won.

Then I came down with breast cancer three and a-half years ago. My luck had run out. I stopped winning. I worked really hard at positivity, but it was tough. I felt screwed over. I carried a weight of anxiety in my gut only released for a while between estrogen suppressants, (what my cancer ate) and for a week after the Wanderlust Yoga Festival last summer.

I turned a corner in January. I began meditating and the anxiety disappeared. For the first time in a long while, I looked forward to events. A happy feeling replaced the weight in my gut.

So what does this have to do with the Kutcher family?

The week before my trip to Burbank, California to visit my son, Kelly, I watched the movie Friends with Benefits starring Mila Kunis and remembered The Secret. I put the intention I would love to see Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, into the Universe. I figured visualizing specific people might help. I also visualized Tim Ferriss of The 4-Hour Work Week fame. I’m a new fangirl.

I borrowed Kelly’s car for the weekend and planned to take it in for an oil change before heading to Malibu on Saturday. While driving to a coffee shop on Friday morning, I vibed out. I had to get the oil change now. On my way to a Jiffy Lube, I discovered a Valvoline with open bays. Bonus! I pulled in and checked it off my list.

Knowing Kelly had worked on music until the wee hours of the morning, I let him sleep in. With that same strong vibe, I changed direction and headed to a coffee shop back near my VRBO in Burbank. I had gone to a cute one the day before, but I wasn’t feeling it.

When I walked in, I was glad to see that although it was small there were several places to sit and hang out. A couple of bars with swivel chairs stood perpendicular to where you ordered, and bench seats and tables were scattered throughout. It was bright and I considered wearing my sunglasses, but slipped them into my purse. I cued up behind a few others to place an order for a $5.00 cup of joe and a lady with curly brown hair lined up behind me.

Seeing Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis blew my mind, but not for obvious reasonsFrom where I stood, I could see the door. In walked Ashton Kutcher. The Ashton Kutcher from my intention the week before! I just about dropped over. My heart slammed in my chest. He wore a baseball cap, a puffer jacket, (it was a bitter 58 degrees for Los Angelians) and jeans. I couldn’t help but stare. He knew, I knew who he was. His intense brown eyes glinted like, Don’t even and then quickly looked away while conversing with the lady behind me. I assume I smiled like an idiot or a kid on Christmas morning.

That’s the funny thing. I never ask for autographs or for photos and don’t talk to celebrities unless they hold eye contact, smile back, and say hello. Even then, I test the water with a, “Hi, how are yah?” If they answer, I might continue depending on the situation. By the way, he has amazing lips. I could see why Mila crushed on Ashton since starring opposite him on That 70’s Show.

The lady behind me gave Kutcher some estimates, but music blaring from overhead speakers drowned out his voice. I strained, but couldn’t hear much of anything. It’s probably why they chose that particular place. “Mind your own beeswax,” my deceased grandmother would have said.

I took a seat at the bar so I could watch Kutcher order and hoped they would sit nearby. The contractor chose a seat next to me. Whoa. Ashton walked toward me after ordering. I could have easily taken a great photograph, but just couldn’t. Not one person hassled him the whole time he was in that coffee shop although I suspect the Asian guy sitting on the end of the bar got some great photos.

I immediately texted my family and they begged for pictures. I took a subtle shot when he ordered breakfast. Then the contractor shuffled her binder and folders on the bar and slid closer to me.

“Do you need me to move down?” I asked.

“Maybe. Someone is joining us with a stroller.”

Holy mother of God! Mila Kunis and their new baby????

I slid as far down as I could and texted my family the update.

“Pictures of Mila Kunis, please,” said Danny and my brother, Joe.

I started writing this post when I sensed someone staring at me. I looked up. “Oh, hi,” I said.

Mila Kunis stood at my right elbow and carried baby Kutcher in a car seat. I couldn’t believe it. She flashed her gorgeous eyes over me and smiled. Then to my dismay, they moved to the back corner right in the window of the coffee shop to continue their conversation.

Mila walked to the line for coffee. She wore jeans, a cute gray sweater, and fancy-like tennis shoes. Tennis shoes are a big thing in LA right now.

I was impressed that both Ashton and Mila waited in line like regular people. They didn’t pull the, “Hey, I’m a celebrity, so I’m not waiting,” card. Nor did the contractor offer to wait for them. Cool.

Again, I could’ve gotten a straight up shot of Mila walking right toward me, but took a subtle photo of her ordering instead.

I picked up Kelly so we could order breakfast and we returned right when Ashton left. Mila still sat in the corner with the contractor.

My observations:

If they would’ve worn sunglasses, I might not have recognized them. They didn’t seem to care. They didn’t engage with me at all although their contractor was friendly. They chose a public place for their meeting and took a chance on paparazzi.

Good on them for living their lives! I can’t imagine having to hunker down all the time and stay out of the public eye. I’ve had some mistaken identity moments and the attention can be awkward. Watch for another post about that. Crazy.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis remind me of Danny and me. I have a feeling this couple will last. I obviously trust my feelings. I crushed on Danny when I was in the 8th grade, but he was four years ahead of me. Our families went to a Brewer game on Memorial Day in 1987 when he was in Wisconsin for the weekend. He rarely came back from Colorado to visit. I flew out for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June and we booked the priest and the Church over the 4th of July. Truth. Check out this post.

The biggest takeaway? The Secret works when you believe in it. I had felt down and kicked in the gut until a few weeks ago. Seeing them after that crazy ass intention, blew my mind. After all my setbacks, I’m back. Thank you Kutcher family for being so amazing and setting me back on track.

I’ll see Tim Ferriss next time.

By the way, don’t bother entering any contests. I’ll win.

Have you seen any celebrities? Who would you like to meet?

  1. Susie, I’m glad you’re bouncing back. Sounds like this was just the spark you needed to light to get burning again. (yeesh sorry for the cheesy metaphor)

This story also makes me feel surprisingly grateful for my relative anonymity here in Bucharest. Although I’m an extreme introvert, I’ll occasionally wrestle with loneliness that comes from difficulty connecting in a country with a ridiculously complex language. This post also reminds me that this anonymity is also freedom. Freedom from intrusion and unexpected encounters.

Thanks for helping me adjust my perspective!

  2. Ahhh that’s so funny. I swore you were gonna write about that awesome plate from Nobu. 🙂 What diner was that? Franks? Paty’s? And of all people … That’s so funny that they helped you bounce back and catch that boomerang right on back to the positive side. Although I’ve always thought of you to be a positive side kind of person. Maybe I catch a $5 cup of tea with you next time 🙂 And DUUUUUDE! Can I just say, how awesome are those Tim Ferris podcasts?! I just discovered him in December and it’s been very cool to hear all these stories. I’m really enjoying them. I haven’t listened to them all but I’ve got to say the Jamie Foxx, Tony Robbins, and Cal Fussman episodes were pretty good. Which ones were your favorites so far? Good post girl. Talk to you later …

I’m am super positive, but the last few years have been tough for a lot of reasons including a downer reaction to my medication. I have absolutely no estrogen in my body. When I started meditating (only 10 minutes and not every single day) all that angst went away and I looked forward to the LA trip. That’s when I thought I’d give the Secret a try again and WAMMO!

I discovered Tim Ferriss through the Brain Pickings newsletter. What a guy! I have only listened to a few podcasts, but will check those out. I bought his 4-Hour Work Week book. Talk about positive. That guy is a human flashlight! Ha!

      1. Isn’t he super awesome? I haven’t bought his book yet but it’s on my list for next pay day 🙂 and meditation rocks doesn’t it? I discovered it a while ago when I found that 20-day challenge and it has totally helped Bring out the Zen and just help me out. I do it at the end of the day at night … You know when I need a minute. But sometimes in the morning after running. It’s definitely a game changer. So glad it’s helping you out 🙂

I looked at Tools for Titans last night at a book store. Hefty book. I may order a used one through Amazon. The first few pages are amazing.
Meditation has been recommended to me for years and it works! I found one that goes into visualization and manifestation that really rocks. I figure I should do that one three times a day. Ha!

    THEY ARE REGULAR PEOPLE, SUSIE!
I kid – but only because I love you.
    Great star-sighting post, young lady.

  4. I’m going to have to get that book! I didn’t know you were a cancer survivor. I am, too. I understand how you felt kicked around. I felt that way too when I was going through chemo. I’m glad to see you’re enjoying some positive vibes!

    1. I am totally riding those positive vibes now! When did you have cancer? My estrogen suppressant brought me down, but not anymore!
The Secret is amazing. It’s not natural to think in terms of events already happening. It works!
      Thanks, Lisa!

      1. I had cancer two years ago. I’m doing well. My estrogen suppressant hasn’t seemed to have to negative effect on me other than menopause! LOL! I’m definitely going to check out that book, though. I’ve got to learn how to do that! 🙂

Of course you were in desirable ground zero. But it is nice to see people out being normal – and others letting them. (Doesn’t Telemundo have English captions? That really helps you pick up the cadence and language when you visit a place – even if you only listen and take pix)

    1. I don’t know much about Telemundo. I hardly watch TV these days!
Ground zero or not, I haven’t seen celebs the last few times other than Ricky Schroeder. He’s a super friendly guy, by the way. Next time I see him, I’ll get my courage up…
      Thanks, Phil!

      1. I just used to travel overseas for business and found the local TV stations with subtitles helped my brain get back in gear with languages.
But TV here and now? Even if there was something entertaining in stead of annoying, the weather’s too nice to be indoors! Spring is coming!

  6. Ok ok ok this is really weird!

I’m also a big fan of ‘The Secret’ and really believe when you’re tuned into the (sorry for sounding all cosmic) but “universe”‘ or whatever it is…. the things you focus on, no matter how unique they are, come to you constantly.

I’ve just recently become addicted to Tim Ferris, after reading the 4 hour work week I’ve now started listening to his podcasts every day. In the morning before work and at night when I’m cooking dinner. Everyone at work has started a tally system for every time I mention “Tim Ferris” in a day haha.

Anyway, it’s just strange that I have stumbled upon this post and you are speaking about the law of attraction AND Tim Ferris. He talks about the state of ‘flow’ for creativity quite a lot ( I noticed you have brought this up in other posts ).

I would love to hear more about how ‘The Secret’ has worked for you 🙂

    1. Wow! I should get a commission for all the books I’ve sold for him. Ha! Love the tally system. I would have tons of points.
The most recent positivity experience was at a writers conference where I met some fabulous agents and learned a ton. I seemed to be at the right place at the right time! How about you? Have you used the Secret lately?

      1. Haha we are doing wonders for Tims business!

That’s really amazing about the conference – sounds like an excellent opportunity and you attracted who you needed to meet 🙂

The first time I went overseas I was so worried I would lose my passport. I kept thinking “don’t lose your passport, don’t lose your passport”. The first night in New Zealand I causally lose my passport (the secret in reverse). It was no where to be found.

Instead of panicking I spent a week meditating and imagining what it felt like to be holding my passport and how happy I was to have found it. The next day it was handed in to a local business with my wallet and all my money!

Long story that taught me to be careful on what we focus on! 😉

      1. Haha, I would have believed it without the photos. Nothing to gain by saying you saw them but the fact it was them specifically and not another celeb couple given your specific request to the universe is pretty cool!

  7. A few comments: loved the post! I will have to check out the book! I have to take tamoxifen for atypical ductal hyperplasia for 3 more years. Is that what you took? Lastly, I saw the Hilton sisters with Nick Carter (I think) at Dolces, Ashton Kuther’s restaurant. Paris was nice and I told her I liked her dress.

  8. I am pleased you are repaired and regenerating faith in the universe. Your post , for me at least, wasn’t about some celebrity sighting, but a return of faith in what the power of thought has to offer. I was given the Secret at a very difficult time in my life. I don’t talk about it for fear of it taking back all I now have. I am surprised you didn’t use it to rid yourself of the disease, but thrilled you found it once more. My cup is half full and I wouldn’t waste it on celebrity sightings when I understand the power it and I can generate. A super post and I will tell you a Secret the power is in you not the book. Xx .

  9. I loved this post, Susie, and you know what? I feel the same as you regarding positive thinking. As soon as I write this response, I’m going to log onto Amazon and order The Secret. I need a great summer read. I’ve had a few run-ins with celebs (here in MN, we don’t see too many), and I react, again, the same as you. I like to give them their privacy. One particular run-in remains clear in my mind:

My mother, her friend, one of my friends, and I had gone to a resort in the Absaroka Mountains in Montana one early summer a few years back. This particular resort has it’s share of ghost stories, which we were all too excited to hear about. We befriended one of the managers at the resort, and he spent an hour or so every evening telling of the ghost stories, showing us haunted rooms, and walking us through other supposedly haunted areas of the resort. Anyhow, toward the end of our trip, he whispered that Dennis Quaid would be coming in for dinner at such and such time. All of us girls cooly sat in the lobby, watched him walk in (but trying not to stare), and sit at one of the back tables in the resort restaurant. Supposedly Dennis was a regular throughout the summer. No one ever bothered Dennis or his date (I’m sure that’s why they continue to visit the restaurant year-after-year), and they both seemed very happy, friendly (they talked to several people on the way to their table), and relaxed. It was a fun experience for four MN girls who don’t come across celebrities too often.

Great post, great writing, and entertaining read! Thanks again, Susie!

  10. The movie “Bad Moms” is my favorite movie ever. I’ve seen it a million times and never get tired of watching it. If I had been in that coffee shop, I might have told Mila how much I loved her amazing performance. And yes, I love chick flicks. 🙂

She wasn’t friendly at all. She flicked her eyes over me and didn’t answer to my, “Oh, hi!” She stood right at my elbow and talked over me to Ashton. I usually don’t talk to celebs, but the last time I was in LA, I stood in line for the bathrooms with Adam Devine and he struck up a conversation. Nice, friendly guy! Modern Family, Pitch Perfect…

        1. I think all celebrities need their personal space. I’ve met tons of them. When they make eye contact and smile, I’ll start up a conversation. Most of the time, I observe them like a rare bird. Ha! I run into them pretty often! Christy Brinkley actually asked me where I was headed when we were waiting for a flight in Chicago. I should have talked to Dancing with the Stars emcee, Tom Bergeron, but I couldn’t believe he would sit in such a conspicuous spot. When I said, “Wow, that is Tom Bergeron’s doppelganger,” he looked up and smiled at me. Ha! I’m heading to LA again and wonder who I’ll run into this time!
