Super Easy Bullet Point Journaling

Easy bullet point journaling for the holidays or anytime! Think it's all about list making? Nope. It's quick and easy and will change your life! The first time I read a blog title including bullet point journaling, I rolled my eyes. I mean, most of us are list makers, right? After seeing other posts around, I finally clicked on one. Whoa! It blew my mind.

The key to bullet point list making is it also becomes a journal.

How?

By recording a weekly list. Don’t roll your eyes yet. I’ll show you mine in a minute.

When I clicked on some posts through Pinterest, I could see how making these journal pages could become super labor intensive. I thought, No way. I’m always working against the clock. Adding something that could take an hour or more to make would soon become a chore. I don’t need to add another chore to my list.

So, I came up with a no-brainer solution.

bullet point journaling tools

Tools:

A notebook.

You decide the size. I like the standard 8.5 x 11 since my lists are long even though the day is short. You’ll see why in another minute or second if you skim.

Markers, colored pencils, highlighter, or pen.

You can make it as cool or as boring as you want. It’s your journal. I can’t look at something that monochromatic or all in one color pen or pencil. Even if I don’t spend a lot of time making it, the journal still has to be eye appealing or I won’t use it.

But I don’t want to take a lot of time, right? I’m not going to color code things or use fancy-like tape. Instead, when I complete a task, I fill in the space or “bullet point” with color. I prefer a highlighter but have used colored pencils.

Ruler.

My first few journal pages were pretty raggedy. I decided to break down and use a ruler to make straight lines. Here’s a cheat! Use another lined sheet of notebook paper as a guide underneath.

Here’s my bullet point journal!

List your work on the left side with the days of the week on top.

Bullet point journal super easy

I refer to the journal when I complete a task to see what else needs to be done. At the end of the day, I peruse my list. Several times, I’ve hustled to fill in as many boxes as I can. Don’t judge. I’m an overachiever…

Obviously, I don’t always get everything done, but that’s where the journal comes in handy. Journaling shows progress over a period of time. Sometimes life gets in the way, like yesterday when I had a painter, a plumber, landscapers and a cleaning service here all at once.

If I’m putting off a task, I ask myself why. It’s usually for a stupid subconscious reason. Once I’ve faced it, I can move on. Sheesh!

Leave a few lines open to add the tasks you want to complete once during the week like calling for appointments, cleaning out a closet, shoveling out your kitchen, organizing a junk drawer. List those things you put off from week to week.

If it’s a major chore, break it down into small parts. That way you’ll feel satisfaction after making a little progress.

I’ve added my appointments because why not? It’s my journal!

I’m all about positivity and working hard. No one is around all day to give me those atta boys when I finish. Bullet point journaling gives me those self-congratulations and pats on the back. Way to go, me!

At the end of another long day, I fill in the spaces. I feel good about myself right before going to sleep. When I wake up, I take a look at my list and start filling in squares again. I accomplish a lot more when I use a bullet point journal. It guides me and keeps me on track.

Give it a try. Maybe you’ll accomplish more too!

Do you bullet point journal? Would you consider making one? Are you a list maker or a journal writer?

    1. It really makes a difference. We went to Maine for a week in October and I got off track. I suddenly realized I hadn’t meditated or written in my gratitude journal. I completely spaced! I’m back on track now….
      Thanks for reading, Jan!

  1. Well, I might could make use of this. I am a fan of lists and of getting stuff done. I think, more importantly, I could use one of these for my employees so they can check stuff off that needs to be done every day. Hmmm. I might be on to something there.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    1. You totally are, Patricia!

It really helps me to stay organized and on task. I bought a beautiful weekly and monthly planner last January, but it just didn’t work for me. Now I use my phone and my home-made journal. It works!

Let me know how it goes.

      Thanks for reading!

    1. Oh, good! There’s a lot out there on the Internet about bullet point journaling, but nothing for slackers like me. Ha! I don’t need another art project. That reminds me. I have to start my home-made Christmas cards!!!

Thanks so much for reading and commenting, Rach! Let me know how it works for you!

  2. I am TOTALLY hooked on bullet journaling! Sometimes I get fancy with habit tracking and cutesy designs, but I’ve found the list strategy is so helpful for me to be actually productive. And it’s fun to write with markers and get a little creative!

  5. Efficient without intimidation! I really like this…it has a good chance of working if I would actually refer to it once I make the bullet point list! 🙂

    1. That’s the trick I keep it with my laptop since I work in my office upstairs or in the kitchen. If I spend a day out, I look at it at that night. It’s a rush to fill in the little boxes. The more I use it, the more I memorize what’s on it.
Have fun with it, Debra! Let me know how it goes.

      1. It’s great to read posts like yours because it reminds us that we all go through these things. Trying to make the most of our days, trying to be organized, trying to cope with our busy lives. I just bought a new, very skookum, list pad and it is amazing how much more enthusiastic it makes me about making lists and following up on them.

  7. Great post! I LOVE bullet journaling, but the first hurdle I had to jump when I started was to let go of all the Pinterest-pretty things everywhere that I could never hope to emulate. Have encouraged folks to give BJ a try, and now have your post as another reference on how to keep it simple – pinned to my BuJo Resources board!

It has made a huge difference in my life. I get twice as much done! Otherwise, I go from task to task and am less likely to feel any sort of accomplishment. I’m glad to hear you are a journaler too!

    1. I think it’s all about making the list in a notebook. I always lose my lists, especially for grocery shopping. Ha! Anyway, you keep the notebook for reference. I get a great feeling in looking at how much I’ve accomplished! Give it a try. I’m sure you’re getting a lot done anyway.

  8. I see so many bullet journals and I want one that is pinterest worthy but not the time that it takes to do it. However love your tips and it looks so much easier to maintain. My lists are getting out of control. Also loved your tip about breaking down bigger tasks to smaller ones so you can feel like you are getting closer to completeing!

    1. Thanks so much, WD!
I should have added another way to break down tasks is to fill in part of the box. I generally make it a triangle when starting the task and fill in the box upon completion.
I graduated in art and was an illustrator, but labor intensive journals take me away from writing. This one works for me!

It’s easy and motivational! I don’t have the time for all the extra fussing it would take to make a beautiful journal. Between life, writing novels and blogging, I have to use my time efficiently. So I made one for people like me!

  9. Hello there, Susie…

nice to see you’re still blogging )

After your suggestion of hysterectomy to me so easily as if it was taking out a tooth, a few years ago… I would like you to know… that after trial and error… I was able to completely heal myself with natural remedies (that your government says is poison) Cancer and other illnesses are a multi billion dollar business… it’s not meant to heal.. it’s meant to mutate women and men and to keep them on drugs for the rest of their lives…

    I took a risk and won… : ) no mutation for me.

    1. Boron (Borax) that’s right! What you kill your cockroaches with, I healed something that “doctors” said can not be cured… it’s gone! I was bleeding 20-25 days per month…. now 4 (if that) Boron heals cancer too.. do a bit of research.. heck… just google it ) Boron/Borax and how government went out of their way to ban it.

    2. Black seed oil. (Heals so many illnesses.)

    3. Apricot seeds (B 17) (cancer killer.)

    4. Stopped eating red meat. (because a lot of it in “first world” is pure poison nowadays.)

    5. No tap water with chlorine inside and fluoride.

Voila! After a year of the above It’s gone ) US “healthcare system” , “doctors”, Big Pharma, Governemnt of crooks can go f….k themselves.

ps — Before you (a woman who went ahead and did what system told her) suggest a hell-ride like hysterectomy so easily to a young lady again, do a bit of research about cancer and natural cures. Another friend of mine has cured her cancer just by eating Apricot seeds alone. And her dog was also cured.

I don’t live in US anymore (non stop on the road for the rest of my life) with only a monthly trip to US per year.

All the very best. Keep an open mind and do some research before running to “doctors”.

    Elena : ) xo

    1. ps — also think twice before getting any “vaccine” … my health took a turn for the worst after “Hepatitis B” vaccine in 2012.. after a month of getting the injection.

    1. I hope it works for you too! When I use it, I make so much progress. Even now, I just looked it over and missed meditating. I can still do that before bedtime!
      Good luck to you!
The trick is to keep it around so you can check it off.

PS – Sorry I missed your comment! Happy New Year!
