Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Between baking, decorating, and dressing up in costume, the month seems to fly by. This year I added some fun Halloween treats to my tricks.
For many years, I made a Halloween Pumpkin cake. I baked two chocolate or pumpkin bundt cakes and then stuck them together with frosting. Then I dyed vanilla frosting orange and coated the cakes to transform it into a pumpkin. Twisting a paper bag for a stem and adding a philodendron vine completed the look.
This year, I perused Pinterest for ideas. I found the Hand Luggage Only boys had put together a great Halloween treat blog post.
I made their sliders but used pork barbecue instead of burgers. I was relieved to find the pickles already sliced for “tongues.” I used Muenster cheese slices for teeth. The telescopic green olive eyes completed the look.
Everyone has probably seen the Puking Pumpkin somewhere by now. It coughed up spinach artichoke dip for my book club. I used wax paper underneath to keep the dip from soaking into the pumpkin which made for easy clean up too.
I made monster cookies by sandwiching frosting between chocolate chip cookies. Red decorator gel worked perfectly for the bloody mouth. For eyes, I broke up peppermint candy and glued them onto the cookies with frosting.
Instead of individual cakes, I saved time by making a pumpkin sheet cake in a broiler pan. I dyed the frosting green and spread it across the top. Then I bought Windmill cookies and decorated the backs of them with RIP. I plunged them willy-nilly like headstones in old cemeteries and added green Sour Patch Kids candy for kicks and giggles.
The ghosts on top of my veggie lasagne are hard to make out, but you get my drift.
Happy Halloween!

It is really gross and although I like the spinach dip, I wonder if I’d be able to get it down (or end up like the pumpkin).

Lol! The puking pumpkin was more subtle in the low lighting so I don’t think anyone had a problem stomaching it. 🙂 Thanks so much, Paige! I really enjoy Halloween! Three more days….

There once was a girl named susie.
Whose Halloween treats were a doozy
They were all a delight
But too much of a fright
So they left me a little bit woozy.

Hahahaha! Too funny! I had low lighting for the party so the pumpkin didn’t seem to gross anyone out. They dove into the dip! Still laughing at your poem… 🙂

Thanks so much, Michelle! It was a fun project. I have to decide whether to pull out the old reliable, Morticia costume or go with one of the three hundred other choices in my basement. I should rent them out! 🙂 Do you dress up?

Back in the day I dressed up. It was great fun. My favourite was when I was in my late 20s and still proportioned like a hottie. I dressed up like a male, black, mechanic. No one had a clue who I was all night. It was great fun (except I couldn’t say much).

You are amazing! These all look great and yummy! I don’t have a talent in baking🙈. We never really celebrate Halloween except for watching scary movies.

Thanks, Carmen! I love Halloween. I saw The Lost Boys, a vampire movie from the 1980’s and laughed through the entire film last week. They took campy and went all out. The one-liners were hilarious! Diane Wiest, Keifer Sutherland and the two Cory’s.

My Mother used to make cow tongue. It was huge and I really liked it. But oddly enough, I thought the word “tongue” was just the name of a food, and I never realized that it was an actual tongue even though it was sitting there, the whole thing, on a plate looking at me (and the cat never got it because we didn’t have a cat). Sometimes in a restaurant, we’d order a pastrami, a corned beef, or a sliced tongue sandwich. I thought that those foods were just things you got from the supermarket like peanut butter. I never thought about the slaughter process of anything. “Mom, where does hamburger come from?” Answer: “It comes from the Supermarket.” I don’t think that years ago tongue was very expensive, but last time I saw a skinny curled up tongue in the supermarket it was mocking me with an enormous price. It didn’t speak to me. Yeah, I think your pickle tongues would be a lot cheaper.

Hahaha! I’ve never eaten tongue that I know of, but we were raised on Oscar Mayer packaged meats so I bet there was a tongue involved somehow… LOL.

This must have taken a lot of planning and effort. While I have not tried many of these delicacies, I am sure thrilled to learn more about them, recipes specially. I am not a huge ‘festival’ guy but food always gets me to the party! Great articulation and photos Susie, I am going to come back for more!
