Was It a Sign or a Threat?

I’m one of those who looks for signs from the Universe but tends to ignore the threatening ones. I see the positive in most situations and expect a positive outcome. That’s how I’m wired. I could never be a novel writer without being an optimist, right?

Boulder Flatirons on a clearer day

With fires raging for two weeks, thick smoke seeped through the windows and doors. I ran an enormous air purifier. If I went outside, I would come back in with a sore throat. With two of the largest Colorado fires under control and several contained in California, our skies in Boulder finally cleared. I took a bike ride, grateful for fresh air on the trail and stopped at Coot Lake for a swig of water.

While returning home, I noticed a large bird in the sky. At first, I thought it was an eagle. I always think of my dad, who died in 2015, when I see them.

My heart soared.

It must be a sign.

I stopped to take a picture.

It swooped in a large circle. Then to my surprise, it headed right toward me!

As it flew right over my head, I realized my mistake.

Turkey vulture

It was a turkey vulture!

The Law of Attraction. What kind of sign was that?

At least it didn’t poop on my head.

One day I looked up in the sky,

And a bird flew by and pooped in my eye.

It’s a dang good thing,

Cows don’t fly.

Any thoughts on signs, birds, or cows pooping from the sky?

  1. It’s supposed to be good luck to be pooped on by a bird, right? Happened to me on the way to church, once, and I turned around and walked home. However, I’m sure you definitely wouldn’t want to be pooped on or thrown up on by a turkey vulture. When my boys were little and would want to sneak up on one we studied their defense mechanisms: one being to throw up its nasty lunch on anyone who gets too close. Ugh. And, I’m always mistaking big birds for eagles, which I love to spot. We have a lot of osprey here, being close to the water, which are very fun to watch.

    1. Osprey??? They’re huge, aren’t they?

Making birds hurl is something I didn’t know about. LOL! I wouldn’t want to be under a vulture’s vomit or poop.

That’s funny about good luck. I was splatted back in grade school but didn’t feel very lucky that day. 🙂

      1. Osprey are pretty big, though not as big as eagles. They’re also called fish hawks, and it’s fun to watch them fish and then carry their dinner back to their perch!

And, yes, I’ll take my luck with a clover, please!

  2. I’m so glad the fires are being contained! The bird was just checking you out, Susie! An eye in the sky. And I just published a post about Canadian Geese poop! 😂

  3. I used to drive a little tiny bright yellow car with t-tops. I loved that car. But, twice I ended up with bird poop on my head while driving with the tops off. The perils of topless driving.

Turkey vultures are weird creatures. They serve an amazing purpose in the world but they creep me out. I think it was just curious. It didn’t mean any harm.

    1. Such a bummer about poopy experience! I’ve only been hit once on the playground at school. For how often I’m outside, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often!

They are a creepy cleanup crew. 😂

      Me too!

  5. “I see the positive in most situations…” Same here, although I do often wonder if I was born lucky to think like that.
Glad your skies have cleared. It looks a beautiful start to the new season in your part of the world, Susie.

  6. Love watching birds and there are so many varieties here. I have a soft spot for pelicans, which look like modern day dinosaurs. I find vultures interesting creatures too and they are good on cleaning up the roads. We recently had our resident bald eagle fly over the house and their nest is just a few blocks over from our home. Every time I see a Cardinal I think of Grandma Bev. I am glad to hear the smoke is clearing up in your area. Here’s to looking out for signs and looking at the positives! Be safe, take care and enjoy your day 🙂

    1. I love your bird associations. Having an eagle’s nest nearby is AMAZING! Cardinals are my favorite, but they don’t even migrate through Colorado. Your grandma must be a special lady. 🙂 Thanks, Renee! Keep your eyes on the sky and don’t fall in any manholes! LOL!

  7. Good to hear your fires are under control! We have a massive flock of geese that fly over our home to a pond just over the ravine. There is something so majestic about watching them….until….😲. Keep your mouth closed😂

    1. Yes, I’ve never experienced smoke like that. I gaze up at the blue sky and smile!!

I love geese! You’re lucky to have them. They migrate through Niwot and hang out in our pond in spring and fall. They should arrive around late September. 🙂
I’ll keep my mouth closed, just in case. LOL!

  8. Oh, so lovely…even with the misidentification.
I think your eagle is visiting here – there’s a pair that nests across the lake from us and you can see them hunting/fishing. A couple of days ago we say 3 swooping low across the neighborhood. Amazing.
Wonder if it was a grown child being seen off before heading out to Universe World-wide College or did they have an out of town guests that they were taking out to brunch?
True blue fun with your posts

  9. I totally would have thought it was an Eagle too! Would have been thinking what a great sign and kept walking. Vulture?! Dude. I never would have thought. Maybe it was looking for something positive away from all those fires and smoke and found you adventuring on your bike. Maybe you were it’s sign! But every time I hear about vultures I remember that Looney Tunes cartoon. 🙂

  10. My youngest daughter has been the recipient of a bird deposit twice, once by a sparrow inside Home Depot, the other a pelican as she sunbathed in Daytona- big difference, pun intended!.
Both times she was told by people observing that it was Good Luck?

    1. Oh, no! Pelican poop has got to be a huge splat. Good thing she could wash off on the ocean. But INSIDE Home Depot? What a bummer! I had never heard of the good luck thing but why not make a wish, that you never get hit with bird poop again! 😂

      Thanks for stopping by, Evie!
