One Way to Prepare for the UK

Prepare to drive on the wrong side of the road in the UK

I will travel far and wide in Europe this summer and will drive during part of the trip.

No big deal, right? I drive all the time. But I’ve never driven in the UK where they drive on the wrong side of the road. Whoa.

Why am I freaking out?

It always takes me a while to get used to doing something new. Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m a spazz. My tennis coach used to take my arm and move it through the motion of every new stroke. When I tried Zumba, I was shamed by the elderly ladies dancing the Samba for the first time.

Don’t get me started on my left-hand. I never know what it’s doing. Just last night, it held a key and I forgot about it.

“Where’s the key?” asked my husband, Danny.

“I don’t know, ” I said. Then I looked at my totally lame left-hand. “Ha! Here it is!”

The first time I ever drove, my dad sat in the passenger seat while we crossed the street to the humongous school parking lot. Only one car parked in the lot that Saturday afternoon. I had tons of room in which to take my maiden voyage in our Buick. I took long, slow practice turns around the lot. That one car frightened me. I closed my eyes to mere slits and cringed every time I drove past. At one point, I pointed our station wagon in its direction and drove at ramming speed. Continue reading

Area 51, Where Are You?

We continued our Epic Road Trip and drove through the desert. I expected temperatures to soar as we approached Death Valley. I mean, it’s the scorched valley of death and hell on Earth to all who enter, right? I had packed two gallons of water, just in case. Come on. I was a Girl Scout back in the day.

We found the world’s tallest thermometer.

world's tallest thermometer

Bummer. It was 10:00 AM and a cool 106! Temperatures in Las Vegas hit 112 degrees the day before. I’m sure it warmed up by afternoon, but we didn’t stick around to find out.

As Danny filled up the gas tank, he spotted an interesting shop across the street. A jerky store. Our son is a huge fan, so we had to check it out.

We weren’t the only ones who stopped. I didn’t know Area 51 was so close to Vegas.

Did you know about the Galaxy Peace Patrol? They work for the Interplanetary Galactic Federation, of course.

Aliens have landed

I took my time while approaching the vehicle. You never know…

Wait. What?

I jumped a mile when the aliens moved in the front seat. They did! REALLY!

I had my doubts, but a new friend tried to slip a dollar in anyway.

It wouldn’t take her money. I think the aliens will be around for a while.

When we hit the road, I suddenly felt like an alien invasion had taken place.

The Epic Road Trip Continues

The Epic Road Trip Continues

We were on an epic road trip. The gap between our car and our son’s began to close. He and his posse had an earlier start and were a couple hours ahead, but pulling a trailer has its way of slowing a car down. They were only 25 miles ahead.

We could catch up.

We watched for Uhauls while driving 85 MPH. Then I made a call. We had passed Kelly’s girlfriend! She had pulled over at mile marker 91 and filled up at an Arco station. We were already in the 70s. Whoa! We couldn’t believe it. Kelly and his friend, who would be his roommate in Burbank, had flown down the road, ahead of us by thirty minutes.

We missed them.

Dang.

Then we learned they would take a pit stop before heading to California. There was still a chance.

We hoped to meet them….

Viva la road trip

in a truly Wild place.

Las Vegas.

We wound our way through a casino. They were in another building.

The Hard Rock Cafe

We headed back into the 112 degree heat and ducked inside the Paris.

We found him!

Vegas is crazy. I made a list of my sensory overload, but it was waaaaaay too long. After a night at The Luxor, we hit the road again.

I had forgotten about Area 51 and its proximity to Las Vegas… That would explain everything.

There’s a lot more to come on our epic road trip. It has just begun…

Epic Road Trip

a photo from the car window rock fiormationsI’m writing my 501st post in my car. Don’t worry, I’m not driving. Danny has both hands on the wheel, but he’s going 85 MPH in the right lane. I know! I’ve always called him an old man with a hat, but he’s cruising today. The speed limit is 80. I love it!

We’re in a race.

Our son and his posse are ahead of us in an epic road trip. They got an early start. They’ve been pulling a Uhaul for 600 miles and we’ve cut the distance between us from 120 down to 25. I think we’re going to catch him tonight.

85 MPH
If we do, can you guess where?

I’ll keep you updated. Our road trip has already become a Wild Ride…
